The 2008 World Series of Poker started Friday May 3oth in Las Vegas, the 39th annual tournament that brings poker players from around the world together to see who is the best, and who can walk away with the most cash. Last year the winner was Jerry Yang, a California psychologist and father of six who won millions in the main event. Friday’s first event was a $10k “championship” event, Pot Limit Holdem, which will likely run for three days.

The renowned World Poker Tour Foxwood Poker Classic wrapped up in the early hours of April 9, 2008 .
It took him until almost 5 a.m. (and close to 12 hours of play on the final table) but Eric Seidel emerged as the winner and took home his first-ever WPT title and $992,890 in prize money.

American Jason Mercier, 21, a PokerStars qualifier from Fort Lauderdale ,Florida, has won €869,000 and the EPT San Remo title. Jason turned his back on a career in teaching after discovering online poker and developing that into a lucrative source of income. The EPT San Remo was just his second major live poker tournament.
A total of 701 players entered the sell-out event creating a record Italian prize pool of €3,195,860.
The event was held in the beautiful Casino Sanremo in San Remo, a popular resort in Liguria on Italy’s north west coast.
The final event of the European Poker Tour, the Monte Carlo Grand Final, takes place April 12-17, 2008 at the Monte Carlo Bay Hotel & Resort in Monaco.

The World Poker Challenge in Reno wrapped up late Friday March 28th with Lee Markholt coming out on top of the $7,500 buy-in championship event. The World Poker Tour victory was the first tournament win for Markholt since April 2005 when he won the Professional Poker Tour event at the Five Star Poker Classic.
The win was worth $493,815. The runner-up, Bryan Devonshire, earned $271,625 for finishing in second place.
The next WPT event, the Foxwoods Poker Classic is scheduled for April 4-9 at Foxwoods Resort Casino in Mashantucket, Connecticut.

There’s a new Poker Champ in the Nguyen household.
Van “The Blaster” Nguyen took down the WPT Celebrity Invitational on Monday, March 3rd, 2008., continuing her husband’s (Men “The Master” Nguyen) tradition of dominance at the L.A. Poker Classic.
With her husband watching from the stands, Nguyen defeated a final table that included Poker Hall-of-Famer Billy Baxter as well as heads-up opponent Ethan Ruby to become the first woman in WPT history to capture a title in an open tournament.
“The Blaster” received $100,000 in prize money as well as the opportunity to show off her skills at the WPT World Championship at Bellagio in April.
The event drew 445 players, and is one of the more exclusive World Poker Tour events on the circuit. The final table was taped and should be televised on GSN within the next few months.

Michael Schulze, a 40-year-old stock trader from Schleswig in Germany, has won 2,154,000 PLN (€609,782) and the EPT Polish Open title, beating 358 other players.
The second place winner was Portuguese pro Ricardo Sousa, for a grand sum of 1,220,600 PLN A total of 359 players entered the four-day, 20,000 Polish Zloty event.
The Polish Open, a four-day Texas Hold’em No Limit tournament was held at Casinos Poland in the Hyatt Regency Hotel in Warsaw from March 11-15, 2008.
The next EPT event is in San Remo, Italy April 1-5, 2008

Phil Ivey won the Final Table of the LA Poker Classic at the Commerce Casino on Thursday February 28, 2008.
Ivey finally broke through and won his first World Poker Tour title, besting Quinn Do in heads-up action and taking down the $1.6 million dollar first place prize. He was also awarded the $25,000 entry into the WPT Championship later this year.
This was Ivey’s eighth trip to a World Poker Tour final table, and his first victory. .

The list of players who were invited to compete in the NBC National Heads-Up Poker Championship has been released. The event takes place at Caesars Palace from Feb. 29-March 2.
Each player, except two players who will qualifiy through NHUPC promotions, will buy in for $20,000 and will play for the grand prize of $500,000. One player will qualify via an online qualifer on FullTiltPoker and another will qualify on PokerStars
